A man lost his life after being attacked by a wild bear at Khedacherra in North Tripura district on Saturday.

The incident occurred when the victim, Rajib Kumar Reang, 38, was on his way to jhum cultivation, a traditional farming method practised by the indigenous communities in the Northeast.

The police said Reang received injuries to his face and leg in the wild bear attack. The incident occurred at least 12 kilometres from the Khedacherra police station.

“His family members took him to the district hospital at Dharmanagar. But he succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. We can get more details after receiving the post-mortem report. His family members lodged a complaint, based on which we registered an unnatural death case,” said a police officer in Panisagar sub-division.

In April, an octogenarian was killed in a wild elephant attack in Teliamura under the Khowai district.

However, wild elephant attacks have come down after the Khowai district administration decided to radio-collar wild tuskers, allowing the authorities to track the movement of the jumbos.

In another case of human-animal conflict, a middle-aged tribal woman was critically injured in a bison attack in Tripura’s Sepahijala district last year.
