A 34-year-old constable from Railway Protection Force (RPF) died and a 24-year-old passenger sleeping inside a train suffered bullet injury on Saturday after two rounds were accidentally fired from the rifle that was with the deceased officer as the train reached Raipur.
The incident took place at 5.45 am when the Sarnath Express, moving from Chhapra in Bihar to Durg in Chhattisgarh, arrived at the Raipur railway station.
The deceased constable Dinesh Chandra, 30, a native of Rajasthan, was on patrolling duty with three others on Friday and were returning to Raipur after duty. The injured man has been identified as Mohammad Danish.
At the time of the incident, Chandra and his colleague Ravinder Gujar were standing near the door of S2 coach. When the train stopped at Raipur, Gujar got down and Chandra, who was behind him, picked up the rifle when accidentally two rounds fired from the weapon.
One bullet hit Chandra in the chest and another pierced through the upper berth seat and hit 24-year-old Danish in his stomach who was asleep at the time.
A police official said Chandra was negligent in handling the rifle as he kept it loaded and did not lock it, which is negligence on his part.
As per railway’s official statement, both Chandra and Danish were rushed to Ram Krishna Care hospital where Chandra succumbed to injuries while Danish’s condition is said to be stable.
“Danish is able to speak and his statement is being taken. He was travelling from Uttar Pradesh with his father Ishtahar Alam. Danish was taking his father to Bhilai for treatment,” said S N Akhtar, Deputy Superintendent of Raipur Railway Police.
