Hitting out at Rahul Gandhi, Union Minister of Textiles Smriti Irani on Sunday said that the Congress vice-president did not hold a single khaat sabha in Amethi for fear of facing questions from the people, but is now questioning Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Parliament.
Irani, who was in Agra to address BJP’s ‘Yuva Morcha Sammelan’, claimed that only those facing huge losses from demonetisation were protesting against it. Calling 2016 a remarkable year in Indian history, former HRD minister Smriti Irani also spoke on the issue of the surgical strike conducted by the Army.
“San 2016 apne aap me anokha itihaas batyega. Jab Pakistan ne bharat ko lalkara to sena ne Delhi ke ishare ka intezaar nahi kia or unko muh tod jawab dia. Kyunki unko pata tha ki Delhi me Narendra Modi baitha hai, jo jawaab dena jaanta hai (The year 2016 will be unique in history. When Pakistan challenged us, the Army did not wait for Delhi’s order and gave them a befitting reply because they knew Narendra Modi sits in Delhi and knows how to reply,” said Smriti irani.

Praising the demonetisation move, Irani said Narendra Modi was fighting corruption by banning Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes, which was supported by all Indians “who want black money to end”. “While we want to discuss developments related to women, farmers, education and the nation at the Centre, still Congress, SP and BSP are not letting us run the Parliament. All because they can see their vehicles getting stopped in UP elections. They just don’t want to talk about development and hence are focusing on just one issue,” she added.
The union minister asked all those sharing the stage with her – including former MoS HRD minister and BJP MP from Agra Ram Shankar Katheria and BJP MP from Fatehpur Sikri Chaudhary Babulal – to wind up their addresses in two minutes, and said that the earlier PM (Manmohan Singh) had failed to take initiate developmental despite being an economist.
“Aur jo nirnay wo lete bhi the to ‘baba’ unko faad ke fek dete the (And any decision that he used to take, ‘Baba’ used to tear up and throw away) ,” she said.
Irani also claimed that while Agra residents are paying Rs 100 for 1 kg of petha, the Modi government has given them insurance cover of Rs 2 lakh for just Re 1 per month. She again took a dig at Manmohan Singh, saying the former PM failed to chalk out any such development schemes for the common man.
While Home Minister Rajnath Singh’s son and BJP UP unit general secretary Pankaj Singh skipped the event on Sunday, Irani too did not mention Rajnath’s tenure as the UP chief minister, claiming that the state needs a government like Kalyan Singh’s.
“Itihaas gawah hai ki Rahul ji Amethi mein ek bhi khaat sabha nahi kar paye kyuki Amethi ke log unse har ek baat pe sawal poochenge, wo aaj pradhanmantri se sansad me jawaab mang raha hai (History is witness to that fact that Rahul Ji failed to hold even a single khaat sabha in Amethi because he knew that people would ask questions on every point, and today he is seeking replies from the PM in the House),” said Irani, adding that it seemed as if the Congress, which had already lost the capital, is all set to mourn for losing UP as well.
She said that this was the reason why Congress had been holding khaat sabhas, as: “Uttar Pradesh me tehravi me khaat ka vitran hota hai (In Uttar Pradesh, khaats are distributed on the 13th day after death.”
“Wo kehte hain ki main bolunga to bhukamp ayega. Hum kahte han bhai bhukamp to ayega magar Congress me ayega. BJP ya bahar to kahi nahi ayega (He claims that an earthquake would come if he speaks, we say the earthquake will come, but in the Congress, not in BJP or outside)” she added.
Irani said India has made a “chaiwala” the prime minister, and he will change the fate of the nation.
“Babulalji (Chaudhary Babulal) keeps telling me how amazed he feels looking at the prime minister, who hardly meets his family, while ‘chacha bhateeja’ keep on fighting here in UP. The beta (son) keeps showing his power to his father,” said Irani.
The former HRD minister asked BJP youths to say “Bharat Mata Ki Jai” so loudly that it may reach the ears of “that Congress youth leader” and “the young leader riding bicycle”.
She also advised them to conduct door-to-door campaigning and remind people of the failures of the previous governments.
