Over 1,500 students from various schools, colleges and other institutes visited various laboratories of the Central Scientific Instruments Organisation (CSIO), which were thrown open to the general public to mark the 73rd CSIR Foundation Day Saturday.
The students also interacted with scientists and witnessed live demonstrations of the instruments developed at CSIO. A team of students from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Ropar, also visited the organisation for the first time.
Professor Ajoy Ghatak, former professor of physics, IIT-Delhi, delivered the foundation day lecture on ‘The Story of the Optical Fibre’. A 1979 CSIR SS Bhatnagar awardee, Professor Ghatak is noted for his contribution to optical science and engineering education.

Highlighting the importance of research in the area of fiber optics, Professor Ghatak said that Professor Kao was awarded half of the 2009 Nobel Prize in Physics for ‘groundbreaking achievements concerning the transmission of light in fibers for optical communication’. In addition to phenomenal application in communications, he talked about various experiments in fiber optics. In his talk, he encapsulated a brief history of the evolution of the field of fiber optics.
Speaking on the occasion, Professor R K Sinha, Director, CSIO, highlighted the goals of CSIR and its contribution in the field of science and technology. He also talked about various incentives and award schemes of CSIR for young scientists and school children.
The staff members of CSIO, who had completed 25 years of service, and those who had retired during the preceding year, were honoured on the occasion. The programme concluded with prizes being given out to the wards of staff, who had excelled in various sports and other events.
The three-day foundation day celebrations also comprised quiz, poetry, drawing and dance competitions.
