At least 100 terrorists are estimated to have been killed in strikes carried out by the armed forces on terror camps inside Pakistan and Pakistan Occupied Kashmir, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is learnt to have told the all-party meeting Thursday.
The second all-party meeting after the Pahalgam strike saw leaders across party lines once again pledging unequivocal support to the government in whatever actions it may take against the perpetrators of the attack and their handlers. The entire political class spoke in one voice lauding Operation Sindoor and extending unconditional support to the government.
Singh briefed the leaders about Operation Sindoor. He is learnt to have told the leaders that the initial assessment of the government is that at least 100 terrorists, including some hardcore terrorists, were eliminated in the strikes. The government shared its assessment of the emerging situation but did not divulge more information given that it is an ongoing operation, the details of which could not be revealed, Opposition leaders said.
The absence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the meeting, chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and attended by Home Minister Amit Shah, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman – all members of the Cabinet Committee on Security – was raised by Leader of the Opposition in Rajya Sabha and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and some of the other Opposition leaders.
“It is alright if he (Modi) thinks he is above Parliament,” Kharge added. “When the time comes, we will ask. But this is a time of crisis and we don’t want to criticise anyone at this time.”
