Fourteen vehicles involved in road construction in Chhattisgarh’s Dantewada district were torched by the banned outfit CPI (Maoist) Monday, officials said. No onsite worker was injured.
The incident took place about 2 km from Bhansi police station. Members of the banned organisation set ablaze four Hyva trucks, four pick-up vehicles, a JCB machine, a crane, a shifter truck, two water tankers and a mixer truck.
“Around 25 Maoists, mostly dressed as villagers and some in (People’s Liberation Guerrilla Army) uniform, torched the vehicles and fled,” said R K Burman, Additional SP, Dantewada. “Soon, security forces reached the spot. Search operations are underway”.
The vehicles were involved in the construction of a two-lane state highway from Dantewada to Kirandul and were stationed in a temporary camp set up by NC Nahar, a real estate and construction company involved in the project. The construction began in August 2022. It’s completion was due before monsoon this year. However, an employee said it is now unclear when it will restart.
“There was no threat perception so security was not there,” a company employee said, requesting anonymity. “All vehicles are insured. As of now, we cannot estimate the value of the damage.”
