Woman stripped and raped in Manipur speaks: Police were with the mob
A day after a video of two women from the Kuki-Zomi community being paraded naked and sexually assaulted in Manipur surfaced, one of the victims told The Indian Express that they had been “left to the mob by the police”.
Two women, one in her 20s and the other in her 40s, can be seen being made to walk naked down a road and towards a field by a mob of men. Some of the men can be seen dragging the two women towards a field and forcibly groping them. In a police complaint that was filed on May 18, the victims had also alleged that the younger woman was “brutally gang raped in the broad daylight”.
Speaking to The Indian Express over the phone from her husband’s home, the younger woman alleged: “The police were there with the mob which was attacking our village. The police picked us up from near home, and took us a little away from the village and left us on the road with the mob. We were given to them by police.”
Who is accountable in Manipur?
“If you don’t take off your clothes, we’ll kill you”, the Meitei mob shouted at two Kuki women in Kangpokpi on May 4. Forcibly paraded, publicly molested, and allegedly gang-raped, it’s hard to fathom what the survivors of this deranged crime are going through. That women’s bodies become sites of male violence, especially during communally charged conflicts, is a long-known grim global reality. But what we witnessed in Manipur is a social and political dislocation of a deeper sort. India’s social contract is melting, and while it may seem geographically peripheral, Manipur is right at the heart of it.
To understand what this meltdown looks like, one needs to focus on two aspects. One, the systems of violence in and around Manipur, and two, the structures of silence around it. Ever since May, when the state imploded into civil strife, social cleavages between Meitei and Zo-Kuki communities have turned into a de facto partition with well over a hundred dead, thousands displaced, many churches destroyed, properties burnt, and a no-man’s land between the hills and the Valley secured by the army to boot.
Citizens across Indian states took to the streets on Friday to protest against the sexual assault of two women who were paraded naked by a group of men in Manipur on Wednesday.
The demonstrations took place in New Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Pune, Lucknow, Guwahati, Kolkata, Bengaluru and Madurai, among others.
