Amidst renewed escalation in violence in Manipur, state armouries were targeted again on Tuesday night, resulting in the death of a person who was allegedly in the crowd that attempted to breach one armoury and successful looted another.
The state this week has been witnessing intense gunfights, particularly in the peripheral areas of Meitei-majority Imphal East district and Kuki-Zomi-majority Kangpokpi district. As firing continued in different parts on Tuesday, at least two attempts were made by mobs to storm Manipur police establishments.
During this, one person died after allegedly attempting to storm the 6th IRB battalion at Pangei in Imphal East on Tuesday night, official sources said. The person was injured when security forces pushed back the mob, and he succumbed to injuries on the way to Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences.
“A large group of people had gathered there at around 10 pm. It can only be deduced that the motive was to seize arms from the establishment… They stormed well into the security perimeter. They broke the gate and entered the armoury area,” said a senior police official.
The 5th IRB batallion located in Imphal East’s Thengju Chingjin was also similarly mobbed and a police official confirmed that the mob seized arms and ammunition from there.
More than nine months since the start of the conflict in Manipur, there continue to be attempts to breach security establishments with the intent to loot arms and ammunition. The highest number of weapons have been seized from Imphal East district.
