The Prayagraj police in Uttar Pradesh have prima facie identified the three men caught after gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed and his younger brother Khalid Azim alias Ashraf were shot dead as Lavlesh Tiwari, Arun Maurya and Sunny Singh. They hail from Banda, Kasganj and Hameerpur, respectively, said the police.

Atiq and Ashraf were shot dead Saturday (April 15) night at the gate of Motilal Nehru Zonal Hospital (Colvin), where the Prayagraj police were taking them for medical examination. Atiq and Ashraf were on four days of police custody remand in the Umesh Pal murder case. The shootout was captured live on television, with the two brothers answering questions posed by reporters.

Sources said the police were collecting more background information on the three men caught. According to sources, Sunny Singh is a resident of the Kurara area of Hameerpur. Sunny’s elder brother Pintoo Singh told the media that he had not been home in 10 years. “We snapped ties with him because of his involvement in criminal cases,” said Pintoo.

The father of Lavlesh Tiwari, a native of Banda’s Lomar village, Yagya Kumar Tiwari, is a private driver. Lavlesh had been staying in the Kevtara area in Banda on rent for the last seven years, the house owner Ramesh Kumar told the media.

“We are surprised after coming to know about his involvement in yesterday’s shootout,” Ramesh Kumar told the media. He added that Lavlesh was arrested a few years ago for allegedly assaulting a woman.

Youngest of three brothers, Arun Maurya hails from the Baghela Pukta village in Kasganj. Local residents said Arun left home after his parents’ death, adding that he used to visit occasionally and claimed to be staying in Noida.

After the shootout, the Uttar Pradesh government issued prohibitory orders under Section 144 of CrPC in all districts. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath constituted a three-member judicial commission to probe the killings.
