An ambulance was set on fire in Iroisemba area in Manipur’s Imphal West, though police did not share details of the incident or whether there had been casualties. A police source said the vehicle was burnt to ashes around 7 pm on Sunday, and a probe was on.
The ambulance, sources said, was coming from Phayeng side and heading towards Imphal city, which is around 8 km from Iroisemba.
The Manipur government meanwhile extended the internet ban for five more days citing continued incidents of “arson of houses and premises”, said an order issued by H Gyaan Prakash, commissioner (Home).
The internet ban has been in place since on May 3, after violence erupted between state’s Meitei & Kuki communities. While mobile data services were suspended on May 3, broadband ban was notified next day.
Simultaneously, the Committee on Tribal Unity, Sadar-Hills Kangpokpi district temporarily suspended the blockade along the national highway on Sunday.
A statement issued by the tribal bodies said it had a consultation on June 4 with various civil society organisations, village chiefs, youth leaders and women’s forum on several issues.
