The minority affairs department is considering extending financial support to the tune of Rs 4 lakh towards beefing up infrastructure of 3,500 madrasas in Maharashtra. Over two lakh Muslim students study in these madrasas.

The project, expected to cost approximately Rs 150 crore, will be discussed in the state cabinet soon. “The state is presently is giving Rs 2 lakh to every Minority Educational Institution for basic infrastructure development. We are now planning to give madrasas Rs 4 lakh per year and also support the salary of one teacher,” Minority Affair’s Minister Arif Naseem Khan told The Indian Express.

Most of the madrasas are funded through community initiatives. Khan said the only criteria for availing the funds would be that the madrasas must be registered with the Waqf Board. There will be no riders,he added.

“The state won’t interfere on how these madrasas operate,” Khan said. The Centre and state have been keen on modernising madrasa education. The Centre’s madrasa modernisation programme has, however, not been accepted by the people running these as they claim a National Board to monitor them undermines their independence.
