Sharif made ‘new beginning’ remarks on ties with India before becoming Pak PM

Nawaz Sharif had said both countries must improve ties for their betterment and prosperity.

A message beamed by a Pakistani news channel featuring Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif calling for a “new beginning” in ties with India has turned out to be remarks made before the general election in May.

Pakistan’s state-run APP news agency first reported the remarks and attributed them to the private news channel. The remarks were also widely reported by the international media.

When it subsequently emerged today that the remarks were from an old interview,APP withdrew its report.

“The short clip run by a private news channel in its 8 pm show (yesterday),without tagging it as “File” footage,was inadvertently used by the Associated Press of Pakistan,” the news agency said.
