Gujarat businessman and PM Narendra Modi’s long time aide, Zafar Sareshwala, has been appointed the new Chancellor of Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU), Hyderabad.

A communication issued by the HRD Ministry to the Vice-Chancellor’s Office on Friday said the President, in his capacity as Visitor of the university, had appointed Sareshwala for a three-year term.

Sareshwala, 51, is the CEO and MD of Parsoli Motors, the only BMW dealer in Gujarat. In the 2002 post-Godhra riots, he suffered losses of Rs 4-5 crore. In 2003, Sareshwala was about to file a suit against Modi till he met him in London and changed his mind.

On Saturday, Sareshwala said, “I don’t know much about MANUU. But I know that empowerment of a community is not possible without proper education.”
