Referring to the Supreme Court directive that restrained the Kerala government from closing down liquor bars in non-five-star category on Thursday, Congress state president V M Sudheeran said there was no discrimination in the state’s liquor policy. “The government would not go back on the liquor policy,” he said.
After a party meeting, Sudheeran said the government had taken a new policy to reduce the availability of liquor within a decade. In this important phase, the government has decided against all bar hotels in the non-five star category. “It is not a matter of discrimination, but the policy of the government,” said Sudheeran.
He said the government would take necessary steps to pursue its new liquor policy after weighing the Supreme Court order, which gave an interim relief to now-functioning 300-odd bars.
The party state chief said the government would present clear answers to the Supreme Court questions. “The government would face the challenges. The party has asked the government to convene an all-party meeting to implement the new liquor policy,” said Sudheeran.
