Curfew in Kupwara after clashes over ‘custodial death’

Officials said the curfew was imposed to maintain law and order situation in the town.

Curfew was imposed in North Kashmir’s Kupwara town a day after clashes between locals and security forces left 15 security personnel and dozens of civilians injured. Clashes in the town have been going on for the last two days over alleged “killing” of 22-year-old Nazir Ahmad Mughal in police custody.

Officials said the curfew was imposed to maintain law and order situation in the town. DIG (North Kashmir) Gareeb Das told The Indian Express that all the entry and exit points in the town have been sealed. “We have imposed the restrictions in Kupwara. Situation is so far under control,” he said.

Police officials, however, said the civilian, who was in police custody, complained of chest pain and was taken to hospital where from he escaped and his body was retrieved next morning.
