The Punjab Congress today took strong exception to Deputy Chief Minister and Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal’ s crude attempt at “exonerating” Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi of the 2002 riots in that state in which thousands of men, women and children were “killed under his watch”.

Party spokesman Rajanbir Singh said it was an open secret that Modi’s ministers and police officers had a hand in the riots, something which has been proved in courts with one such minister being convicted and several officers behind bars. He said revelations by some senior officers had brought Modi’s role under scrutiny.

Sukhbir yesterday had rejected any parallels between the Gujarat riots and the 1984 anti-Sikh violence in Delhi and other places and had said,“Yes,the Gujarat violence happened when he was the Chief Minister. But heading the government doesn’t mean he was behind the riots”.
