The J&K Police have launched a crackdown against the youth who are “circulating rumours” on social networking sites and mobile phones in the Valley. Police said three youths had been booked for “airing rumours” and that they are investigating updates and other posts that have surfaced on social networking sites.
“We have registered FIRs against three WhatsApp administrators for airing rumours and fabricated information that could create disturbances and vitiate peace in the Valley,” a senior police officer said. “All the three belong to different districts of the Valley.”
The officer said that investigations are on and more arrests are expected. “We are investigating the content that surfaced on WhatsApp and social networking sites,” he said. “In the next few days we will arrest more people responsible for spreading fake news.” Sources in the police said the action against the administrators of groups was taken after many of them were found posting “concocted stories to vitiate law and order” in the Valley.
