A YEAR after he went on leave after a bout of ill-health, Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS) sah-sarkaryawah (joint-general secretary) Suresh Soni, has returned to active work in the Sangh and is set to get a new role.
On Monday, Soni, who has had his share of controversies earlier as an RSS leader in charge of the BJP, had meetings with BJP president Amit Shah and Home Minister Rajnath Singh, among others, it is learnt.
Sources said he came to Delhi last week and subsequently left for the RSS headquarters in Nagpur for meetings with senior functionaries.

Seen as an able organiser, Soni is likely to attend the RSS prant pracharaks’ annual meeting in Kanpur on July 14-16. His new assignments may be announced there, sources said.
Soni was on leave on health grounds since July last year — first under treatment and subsequently writing a book on RSS, sources said. However, he retained the position of joint-general secretary during this phase.
He was in charge of BJP affairs in the RSS between 2006 and October 2014, when Krishna Gopal was given this task. His name had also surfaced in the multi-crore Vyapam scam in Madhya Pradesh.
When she was removed from the BJP in 2005, Uma Bharti had criticised Soni on several occasions for creating problems in the party’s MP unit.
Considering Soni’s interest in the education sector, he may be assigned a role in coordinating with the Narendra Modi government on education-related issues, sources said.
