After President Pranab Mukherjee, Vice-President Hamid Ansari has expressed concern about the “emergence of a propensity for intolerance of diversity and dissent”.
Addressing the Conference on Social Innovation and Social Harmony organised by Pune International Centre on Tuesday, Ansari said: “These preliminary observations are necessary to delineate the societal backdrop essential for optimal creativity in a society seeking to maximise its innovative genius and to ensure a social consensus around equality, justice and empowerment, more so because there is a reason today for concern about this consensus and about the emergence of a propensity for intolerance of diversity and dissent.”

Ansari said a democracy not receptive to various identities remains majoritarian. “This is why the Indian Constitution has provisions for protection of minority rights and balancing group rights with individual rights.”
Respect for human rights, he said, includes acceptance of diversity and not merely tolerance of it. “This transition from tolerance to acceptance in actual day-to-day practice rather than a mantra in political discourse is critical to make a society inclusive,” he said.
