Four policemen in Chhattisgarh’s Janjgir Champa have been arrested for allegedly beating to death a Dalit youth in custody.

They have been identified as thana incharge Rajput, constables Sunil Dhruv and Hilharan Miri and home guard Rajesh Kumar.

Satish Norge, 35, was allegedly assaulted on September 17 after he had an altercation with electricity board officials in Nariyara village when he lodged a complaint about a transformer that was not functioning.

Following his death, members of Dalit community resorted to stone-pelting in a locality dominated by upper-caste Thakurs. The villagers said Lav Singh, an official of electricity board, and Nanhe Singh Thakur, a petrol pump owner, called police.

SP Ajay Yadav said, “All four policemen named in the FIR have been arrested and sent to Bilaspur jail. They have been charged with murder with common intent and sections of the SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Act.”
