The lone exit poll that got the Bihar results right and was never broadcast, finally had its last laugh as the grand alliance won Sunday.
The Axis exit poll had predicted 169-183 seats for the grand alliance, but its tally was withheld by CNN-IBN reportedly because the channel was not convinced. The channel advertised the poll as the biggest post-poll exercise but backed out at the last minute. Mumbai-based Axis-Ad-Print-Media (India) Ltd removed the data from its own website. On Sunday, as trends started coming in, Axis re-published them on its website.

It also issued a statement vindicating its survey results: “Axis My India’s Bihar Assembly Elections 2015 exit poll scored a remarkable 100 per cent accuracy rate. Having pioneered the first-ever seat-by-seat prediction of all the constituencies during the 2014 general election, Axis My India Survey maintained this unique feature for all state assembly elections with a consistent 95 per cent accuracy rate. In fact, though others were stating a lead by NDA over others, Axis My India poll was the only one to predict JD(U)+ victory with a significant number of seats.”
Axis had predicted 58-70 seats for the NDA (BJP 40-48, LJP 7-9, HAM 5-6, RLSP 6-7) and 169-183 seats for the grand alliance [JD(U) 70-76, RJD 73-77, Congress 26-30].
Pradeep Gupta, chairman of the agency, said, “Our methodology was simple, we relied on face-to-face interviews with voters in each constituency. We ensured the composition of the sample reflected the demography of the constituency. We had done the pre-poll survey for the channel, the exit-poll findings we had shared with everybody. We have no issues with anybody for having aired or not aired our findings. I am very happy that we have been proved correct.”
