The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) on Wednesday approved the extension of General Anil Chauhan as Chief of Defence Staff’s (CDS) tenure up to May 30, 2026 or until further orders, the Ministry of Defence said in a statement.

General Chauhan was appointed as CDS on September 28, 2022. General Chauhan would also function as Secretary to the Government of India in the Department of Military Affairs (DMA), under the Defence Ministry. The DMA was created when the government had first created the position of CDS and appointed General Bipin Rawat to the post in December 2019.

According to an official gazette dated December 28, 2019, the upper age limit for the CDS has been fixed at 65 years. General Chauhan will turn 65 in May next year.

According to officials, General Chauhan will continue steering the proposed reform of creating theatre commands. After General Rawat died in a helicopter crash in 2021, General Chauhan has been at the helm of discussions and deliberations on the planned structure of theatre commands.

Before theatre commands are created, he will also be responsible for overseeing efforts to create jointness and integration among the three services and bringing in synergy in logistics, appointments, infrastructure and procurement, among others.

General Chauhan was commissioned in the Army in 1981 and has had a distinguished and illustrious career with key command and staff appointments, the ministry statement said. As Lt General, he commanded a corps in the North East. He was also General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Eastern Command from September 2019 until his retirement in May 2021.
