Fox-hole IEDs with 50 kg explosives found by security forces in Chhattisgarh’s Bijapur district

The police said the mechanism to plant the IEDs is the same that was used in the Dantewada attack last month which had killed 10 District Reserve Guards (DRG) and a private driver.

A major Maoist attack was averted by the security forces after they found Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) containing around 50 kilogram of explosives buried under a road in Chhattisgarh’s Bijapur district Wednesday.

The IEDs were spotted by a team of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) on the Avapalli-Basaguda road near the Durga temple in Bijapur district which has a highly active presence of Maoists.

The IEDs were buried using the fox-hole mechanism which was also used in Dantewada last month. The April 26 attack had left 10 District Reserve Guards (DRG) and a private driver dead.

The IEDs found Wednesday were buried around five feet beneath the road in two plastic containers which were 8×8 feet in size.

A police officer of Bijapur district said, “The fox-hole mechanism is the one where a hole is dug to plant the explosives beneath a road. This was done in the Dantewada attack last month.”

On April 26, the Naxals had executed the attack on the Aranpur road when the DRG jawans were returning to the Dantewada district headquarters with two captured Maoists after completing an anti-Naxal operation.

The team had not conducted a road opening party (ROP) procedure and a small group of Maoists hiding around 100 metre away from the road detonated the command IED leading to 11 deaths.
