AT his first rally in the ongoing LS polls, BJP leader Varun Gandhi on Thursday termed Sultanpur as his “karmabhoomi” and asserted that his mother and incumbent MP Maneka Gandhi has a close connection with the people of the Sultanpur constituency from where she is seeking re-election.
The Pilibhit MP said, “Many seasoned and charismatic leaders are contesting this time but there is only one region where people do not address their MP as ‘saansad ji’ or ‘mantri ji’ but as ‘mata ji’. When I came to Sultanpur for the first time, I felt the ‘khushbu’ (fragrance) of my father here, but today I feel proud to say I have come to my motherland.”
Sultanpur, he said, “wants a person, who considers them as family and always stands with them.” His mother, he claimed, is neither driven by arrogance or vendetta nor has she tried to create differences between people. “I have come here not as a ‘neta’ (leader) but as a ‘beta’ (son).”
Later, speaking with PTI, Maneka Gandhi said, “Varun will hold 15-20 meetings today. His campaigning will benefit us.” She urged people to vote keeping personal interest in mind.
