JD Vance India Visit Live Updates: ‘If India-US fail to work together, 21st century could be dark time for world,’ says US VP

US Vice President JD Vance began a four-day visit to India on Monday as the two countries seek to unlock economic opportunities and negotiate a bilateral trade deal.

Vance will meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi for talks on the economy, trade and geopolitical ties.

Vance’s visit is seen as an important diplomatic mission by President Donald Trump’s administration, and it coincides with a rapidly intensifying trade war between Washington and Beijing, which is New Delhi's main rival in the region.

A trade deal between India and the US could significantly enhance economic ties between the two countries and potentially strengthen diplomatic ties.

The US is also India’s largest trading partner, with bilateral trade valued at $190 billion until recently.

India’s Foreign Ministry has said the visit will “provide an opportunity for both sides to review the progress in bilateral relations” and the two leaders will “exchange views on regional and global developments of mutual interest.

MEA Randhir Jaiswal welcomed JD Vance, his wife Usha Vance and US delegates.

Jaiswal posted pictures from the arrival on X and affirmed that the visit will strengthen India-US ties. "The Official Visit (21–24 Apr) spanning Delhi, Jaipur & Agra is expected to further deepen the India–US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership"

The US V-P is on a four-day visit to India where he will hold talks with Prime Minister Modi on bilateral trade, US tariffs, among other key issues.

In addition to the diplomatic meet, the Vance family will also go on a cultural expedition. Akshardham Temple, Jaipur's Amer fort, Agra's Taj Mahal is on the list.

For his first day, Vance will be visiting the Akshardham temple in the capital city.

Akshardham Temple Spokesperson Radhika Shukla said, "The Vice President and the Second Lady are coming for the Darshan at Akshardham Temple. She has Indian roots... They are coming here directly from the airport... They will first have the darshan of the replica of Lord Swaminarayan and then they will see the architecture of the temple... We are told that they may come anytime after 11 am..."

The Second family of the US is also set to visit Jaipur.

In Jaipur, Vance will tour the Amer Fort. He will receive a traditional welcome, and the procession will include two elephants named Chanda and Pushpa, at the palace’s Surajpol Gate, officials said. They will also visit the Rajasthan International Centre, where Vance is scheduled to address a gathering on the broader aspects of India-US relations, particularly in the context of the Trump administration.

This visit holds personal significance for Vice President Vance, whose wife, Usha Vance, is of Indian origin. Upon their arrival in New Delhi on Monday morning, Vance and his family will visit the Swaminarayan Akshardham Temple. Following this, the Vance family is scheduled to visit a shopping complex featuring traditional Indian handcrafted goods, where they will explore India’s vibrant craft and textile industries.

In addition to their stay in New Delhi, the Second family of the US will travel to Jaipur and Agra.

This is JD Vance's first visit to India after taking over as the Vice President of the United States. He is accompanied by a five-member delegation, including representatives from the Pentagon and the State Department.

Upon arrival in New Delhi, the Vance family witnessed a cultural performance organised to welcome them, reflecting India’s rich heritage and hospitality at Palam airport.

Parking Ban and Public Advisory

Strict no-parking orders are in effect on Sardar Patel Marg, Gurugram Road, Parade Road, Thimmaiya Marg, and Air Force Road.

Any vehicles found parked in these restricted zones will be towed and prosecuted. Towed vehicles will be relocated to designated traffic pits at Kalibari Mandir Marg and in front of Bhairon Mandir.

Commuters are advised to plan their travel in advance, especially if heading to ISBTs, railway stations, or airports, and are encouraged to opt for public transport.

Keeping high security measures for the VIP visit in mind, the Delhi Traffic Police issued a traffic advisory for commuters.

From 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM on Monday, several traffic diversions and restrictions will be enforced to ensure smooth movement and public safety around key central roads.

Diversions and Roads to Avoid

Motorists are advised to avoid major routes including Air Force Road, Thimmaiya Marg, Parade Road, Gurugram Road, and Sardar Patel Marg. Diversions will be in place at several points, such as:

- Thimmaiya Road

- Calvary Road

- Cariappa Marg

- Gurugram Road to Rao Tula Ram Marg

- Ulan Batar Road to Rao Tula Ram Marg

- Vande Matram Marg / Simon Bolivar Marg T-Point

- Sardar Patel Road / Panchsheel Marg

- Sardar Patel Road / Kautilya Marg

Commuters heading towards 11 Murti to RML are advised to use Vande Matram Marg via Dhaulakuan Flyover, A R Shankar Road, Talkatora Road, and Sheikh Mujib-Ur-Rehman Marg.

For those travelling between IGI Airport and Dhaula Kuan Flyover, the Rao Tula Ram Marg is the recommended alternative.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will host a dinner for US Vice-President J D Vance at his residence on Monday, as he begins his four-day visit to India.

Vance is expected to discuss issues related to tariffs and the bilateral trade deal during his meeting with Modi. Sources said he is expected to press India on the issue of buying US defence equipment.

Vance’s first visit to India after assuming office as V-P comes in the backdrop of the sweeping tariff regime announced by US President Donald Trump — which has been paused for 90 days — against most countries, including India.
