A police head constable in Chhattisgarh’s Maoist-affected Sukma district was killed by one or more unidentified assailants while he was in a funfair in the early hours of Sunday, said officials.
The victim, Sodi Laxman, was in an inebriated condition, and he had gone alone to the funfair, said the police. He was stabbed in the neck with a sharp weapon at around 2 am, they added. Laxman is survived by wife and children, said the police.
The murder occurred in the jurisdiction of the Gadiras police station, around 25 kilometres from the Sukma police headquarters.
Superintendent of Police (Sukma) Kiran Chawan said, “The modus operandi was of a small action team of Maoists but the Maoists have not yet claimed the murder.”
The banned Communist Party of India (CPI)-Maoists usually claim responsibility for all the attacks done by them by either dropping chits at the crime spot or issuing a press statement.
Since the BJP came to power in Chhattisgarh in December 2023, the state’s security forces have carried out extensive anti-Naxal operations, resulting in the deaths of 118 Maoists this year, compared to 24 killed in the entire previous year.
Sukma is among the districts worst affected by Maoist activities and is considered a war zone by security forces along with the neighbouring Bijapur district. Sukma forms the southern tip of the state, sharing its border with Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Odisha. The border area with Telangana and the Bijapur district are still under the heavy influence of Maoists.
