Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Monday hit out at the Union Budget of 2024-25 on Monday, calling it a ‘chakravyuh’ created by the government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The Congress leader said the ‘chakravyuh’ that has captured India has three forces — the idea of monopoly capital and concentration of financial power; institutions and agencies such as the CBI, ED and IT department; and the political executive. “India is trapped in ‘chakravyuh’ represented by lotus symbol that PM Modi wears on his chest,” he said.
Gandhi’s reference was to the Mahabharat, according to which Abhimanyu was killed in a ‘chakravyuh’ — a multi-tiered maze and formation — in which he was trapped. He further said the chakravyuh looks like a lotus (the BJP symbol). “What was done with Abhimanyu is being done with youth, women, farmers and MSMEs,” he said.
Gandhi said that an atmosphere of fear pervades the country and alleged that the Budget’s sole aim was to strengthen the framework of monopoly capital, political monopoly and the deep state.
“The Budget has not addressed issue of tax terrorism that has hurt small businesses hard. The finance minister did not mention the issue of paper leaks, which is affecting the youth. There are no provisions in budget for pension for Agniveers. A legal guarantee of MSP in the Budget would have helped farmers get out of ‘chakravyuh’, but the government did nothing in that regard. Dalits, tribals, and backward classes account for 73 per cent of the population, but hardly get anything from Union Budget,” he said.
Gandhi recounted that while the UPA government was at the Centre, it broke the ‘chakravyuh’ through actions such as MGNREGA, Green Revolution and the freedomstruggle. “You build a ‘chakravyuh’, and we break it,” he said, asserting that the opposition would break this cycle by carrying out a caste census.
