Gujarat Governor Acharya Devvrat was given the additional charge of Maharashtra’s Governor on Thursday.
The move follows the former Governor of Maharashtra, C P Radhakrishnan, demitting office due to his election as the Vice-President of India, according to an official release from the Press Information Bureau (PIB).
“…the President of India appointed Acharya Devvrat, Governor of Gujarat, to discharge the functions of the Governor of Maharashtra, in addition to his own duties,” the release added.
On Wednesday, Devvrat had visited New Delhi and met Radhakrishnan at the New Maharashtra Bhawan to extend his congratulations to him on being elected as the Vice President.
Appointed as the Governor of Gujarat on July 22, 2019, 66-year-old Devvrat has already completed his five-year term. Last year, speculations were rife about his successor. However, he continues to be the Governor of Gujarat. A staunch promoter of natural farming, Devvrat has not only led natural farming campaigns in Gujarat but across several other states as well.
He has served as the Governor of Himachal Pradesh from August 12, 2015, to July 21, 2019, during which many projects and campaigns related to natural farming, cow-rearing and cow-breed improvement, Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, social harmony, de-addiction, tree plantation and water conservation were implemented on a large scale with government and public participation.
Devvrat, who is already the chancellor of 24 state universities in Gujarat, found himself at the centre of a row after he, on October 11,2022, accepted the offer to be the next chancellor of Gujarat Vidyapith — founded by Mahatma Gandhi in 1920. With being a “Gandhian” being one of the prerequisites to hold the position, Devvrat’s appointment had triggered a controversy prompting him to clarify that he was a Gandhian himself.
