There are 58,929 waqf properties which are facing encroachments and of these, 869 are in Karnataka, the government told the Lok Sabha on Wednesday.
The information was shared by Union Minister of Minority Affairs Kiren Rijiju in the Lok Sabha in reply to an unstarred question by BJP MP Basavaraj Bommai.
“As per the details available on WAMSI (Waqf Assets Management System of India) 58,929 waqf properties are facing encroachment, out of which Karnataka has 869 such waqf properties,” read Rijiju’s reply.
To the question on the steps taken to investigate encroachments on waqf properties, Rijiju said that as per Sections 54 and 55 of the Waqf Act, the chief executive officer of state Waqf board has power to take legal action against unauthorised occupation and encroachment of Waqf properties.
