Janhvi Kapoor and Varun Dhawan starrer Bawaal is set to release this Friday and the first reactions from their peers in the film industry sound quite promising. The film, directed by Nitesh Tiwari, is the story of a newly wed couple who travels to Europe to visit World War 2 sites while their relationship is going through a difficult patch.
Arjun Kapoor praised the film and called it a “unique yet entertaining” story. He shared, “I thoroughly enjoyed this love story.. It’s a unique yet entertaining film… It has heart soul and a whole lot of entertainment yet it makes you wonder about relationships and life that’s how simple it is.”
Karan Johar called it an “unusual and original love story” and praised the performances of Varun and Janhvi. He shared on Instagram, “Possibly the most unusual and original love story you have seen in the mainstream… directed with nuance-abandon and yet so much restrain… it moved me in so many moments… proud film for Sajid to back and for @Amazonprimevideoin to house and the cherry on the cake is the career best performances of @varundvn and @janhvikapoo… They are the heartbeat of Bawaal @niteshtlwari22 @nadiadwalagrandson.”
Shashank Khaitan, who recently directed Govinda Naam Mera, shared, “Bawaal is so unique and endearing… VD is the life of Bawaaal.. He makes Ajju bhaiya real and lovable… JK has grown so much as a performer. She is a delight in the emotional scenes.”
Radhika Madan also praised the performances of the two leading actors in the film.
Bawaal’s teaser had a few visuals of a concentration camp and when asked about why Nitesh had chosen to go ahead with World War 2 backdrop for the film, the filmmaker told Galatta Plus that he wanted to present “something fresh” to his audience. “Rather than him (Varun’s character) teaching World War 2 in the school, he could have been teaching any of our historical stuff. My biggest thing was there is something fresh which I always crave to bring to my audience, both story wise as well as visually,” he said.
Bawaal is releasing on July 21 on Prime Video.
