Nadaaniyan has been in the news ever since its debut on Netflix on March 7, mostly for the wrong reasons. The film starring Boney Kapoor-Sridevi’s daughter Khushi Kapoor, and Saif Ali Khan-Amrita Singh’s son Ibrahim Ali Khan attracted a lot of backlash for their performances. The film was trolled online with many ridiculing the star kids and their acting skills as well as the inept storyline and handling of the film. Now, Karan Johar, who has produced the film under the banner Dharmatic Entertainment, has broke his silence and addressed the criticism of the film. At a recent trailer launch event of a Punjabi film, the producer condemned people’s choice of language to criticise the film.

He said, “A critic wrote, ‘I want to kick this film’. I have a major issues with these people. I have no issues with the industry, trolls, opinion makers, social commentary. I happily accept people’s opinions. In the same way, we have also our Nadaaniyan, Gustakhiyaan, and Gehraiyaan. But, when you write such things in your review, it is not a reflection of the film, it is a reflection of you.”

Karan Johar said that these people don’t think that the people they are targeting and criticising are also someone’s son, and daughter. He shared, “These intellectual cinema lovers should have a sensitive side because nobody wants to be kicked. Kicking is violence. It is physical violence. When you are not allowed violence in the real world, even words are equally violent. You should be condemned for being violent.”

Earlier, Hansal Mehta, Vikram Bhatt and Sonu Sood had also defended the starkids and said people are being unfair in many cases. He said people’s comments against the film are in “bad taste”. “It must be traumatising for the young actors,” said Hansal Mehta to ETimes.

Vikram Bhatt also said he found no fault with Ibrahim’s performance, calling his acting better than father Saif Ali Khan when he started. “I am not able to understand the trolling that the film is facing on social media as I like both the lead actors—Khushi and Ibrahim. I liked Ibrahim, it’s a different matter whether the film is good or not. But these days, there is an argument about nepotism, and to win that argument, you have to be superb, but that’s not fair for newcomers. It’s his first film. Who does superb in their first film? He has a presence in front of the camera, you can tell that he knows acting. So, I am sad about this whole thing,” he told Galatta.
