Team India who participated in the 17 International Olympiad on Astronomy ( IOAA) happened in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil won one gold and four silver medals. The event, organised between August 17 and 25, saw five Indian students participating from various states of the country.
Team India included Karnataka’s Daksh Tayalia who won gold, Maharashtra’s Aayush Kuthari and Sanidhya Saraf, Telangana’s Banibrata Majee, Bihar’s Panini who all won silver medals for the country.
There were 232 students from 52 countries participated in IOAA. In the medals tally, India was placed in the eighth position, behind Iran (5 golds), the USA (3 golds), Romania, South Korea, Singapore, Slovenia and Canada (2 golds each).
The IOAA competition has three components — theory, observation and data analysis. In addition, there is a mixed-nation team competition.
Sharing about the question patterns this year, the theoretical component had problems on various topics like understanding of the sundial, estimating the mass of a galaxy cluster, calculating highly elliptical orbits of asteroids, physics of white dwarfs, accretion discs of black holes and others.
The observational component used the Galileo-scope (a small refracting telescope) to measure the coordinates of an artificial star and mark it on a star chart, claimed the press release.
Another pride for the country is that India will be hosting the next edition of the International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA). The 18th edition will be held in August 2025.
