A petition has been filled in the Supreme Court to fill around 5,000 vacant MBBS and BDS seats across the country pertaining to the academic session 2016-17. The petition, filed by Sankalp Trust, has asked the top court to fill vacant seats in all medical and dental colleges by way of centralised counselling and on the basis of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) ranking of the candidates.
Dr Gulshan Garg, Sankalp Trust, said, “We calculated the vacant seats listed on various states websites and realised as many as 5000 seats are not filled. Our society needs doctors and we cannot afford to miss a single seat.”
As per the petition, since the situation created by the introduction of NEET and late finalisation of modalities of the counselling processes for admission to medical and dental colleges, most of the seats in various states could not be filled by September 30, 2016.
The Supreme Court will hear a plea on this matter on October 28. The case will be represented by senior lawyer Prashant Bhushan.
This year, NEET was made mandatory for admission to private and deemed institutes, just two days before the AIPMT held on May 1.

From next year onwards, there will be NEET for all MBBS, BDS exams and it will have only one level. The examination will be based on the NCERT syllabus. The undergraduate exam would be conducted by CBSE while the post-graduation exam will be held by the national board of examination.
