Amit Patra has today taken on the additional responsibility as the Director of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur. Professor Patra is now the Director of IIT Banaras Hindu University (IIT BHU). He will be serving in this new capacity until the regular incumbent assumes office or until further notice, whichever is earlier.
Professor Patra is an alumnus of IIT Kharagpur. He previously held several key leadership positions at the institute, including serving as the Dean of Alumni Affairs and International Relations between 2007 and 2013, and as the Deputy Director from 2021 to 2024.
Professor Amit Patra received his BTech (1984), MTech (1986), and PhD (1990) degrees from IIT Kharagpur, where he has been a faculty member in the Department of Electrical Engineering since 1987. He is currently a Professor in the Higher Academic Grade Pay.
Over the years, Prof. Patra has contributed to research and academia, with particular expertise in power management circuits, mixed-signal VLSI design, fault diagnostics, prognostics, and embedded control systems, a statement from IIT BHU said.
The statement further added that Prof Patra has been a recipient of several academic accolades, including visiting prestigious institutions globally. He was a Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Ruhr-University, Bochum, Germany (1992-93 and 2000), under the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. He has also visited the Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta (2003) and the University of Maryland, College Park (2016) for academic collaborations.
Between 2004 and 2007, he served as the professor in-charge of the Advanced VLSI Design Lab at IIT Kharagpur and was “instrumental” in the establishment of the IIT Kharagpur Research Park in Rajarhat, Kolkata, during 2020-21, it further added.
