While Parliament security personnel have come under criticism for Wednesday’s breach, the Lok Sabha secretariat has clarified that both Delhi Police and the CRPF are responsible for security. But with the new building, the always-changing security rules and lack of adequate personnel, Parliament security staff have been left overburdened, sources said. Since the beginning of the Winter Session, many MPs, too, have faced difficulties with the building. Ministers have struggled have to find their rooms, and MPs are often found searching for the canteen, restrooms or the library. There have also been instances when the security staff could not identify the MPs. On Tuesday, too, an MP was denied entry at a gate as the staff could not identify them.
BSP chief Mayawati was a Lok Sabha member during the 2001 attack. On Wednesday, she did not react to the security breach. But her political heir and nephew Akash Anand did, calling it a “shocking” lapse that embarasses the nation.
