A 21-year-old was killed and six others were seriously injured after a vehicle carrying a sound system ran over them during a procession organised to celebrate the birthday of a former Zilla Parishad president in Junnar in Maharashtra’s Pune district on Wednesday.
The incident took place in the Kanda Market area of Junnar town, located around 95 km from Pune city. The Pune Rural police have arrested the former Zilla Parishad president, Devram Lande, and the driver of the vehicle, Namdeo Rokde.
“We have booked four people, including Lande, his son Amol, Rokde, and the owner of the sound system, Saurabh Shekhre. We have arrested Lande and Rokde. They have been booked for culpable homicide and attempt to commit culpable homicide. We have also booked them for disobeying the order issued by a public servant because the procession was taken out without permission,” a police officer from Junnar police station said.
The procession consisted of a mini truck carrying a sound system speaker array, and a Zanj Pathak, a group of cymbal players, the police said. “Around 2.15 pm, when the procession was at Kanda Market, the driver of the mini truck carrying the speaker array ran over multiple members of the group of cymbal players,” the officer added.
The police identified the deceased as Aditya Kishor Kale and the injured as Kishor Ramchandra Ghogre, 34; Balu Kisan Kale, 34; Govind Shankar Kale, 33; Sagar Sunil Kedari, 25; Vijay Hiraman Kedari, 26; and Sachin Ganpat Kedari, 33.
