Pune city police have banned the entry of heavy vehicles on various roads in mid-city areas during the Ganesh Festival.
A press release issued by Deputy commissioner of police (traffic) Himmat Jadhav stated that from August 25 to September 7, heavy vehicles would not be allowed on Shastri Road (Senadatta chowk to Alka chowk), Tilak Road (Jedhe chowk to Alka chowk), Kumthekar Road (Shanipar to Alka chowk), Lakshmi Road (Sant Kabir chowk to Alka chowk), Kelkar Road (Futka Buruj to Alka chowk), Bajirao Road (Puram chowk to Gadgil statue), Shivaji Road (Gadgil statue to Jedhe chowk), Karve Road (Nal Stop chowk to Khandoji Baba chowk), FC Road (Khandoji Baba chowk to Chapekar chowk), J M Road (S G Barve chowk to Khandoji Baba chowk), Sinhagad Road (Rajaram bridge to Savarkar chowk) and Ganesh Road (Powerhouse to Futka Buruj).
Considering the huge crowd in the mid-city areas for buying Ganesh Idols, temporary traffic changes have been made on Shivaji Road from August 25 to August 27.
Police said several stalls for selling Ganesh Idols are set up every year near Shramik Bhavan, Kasba Peth police chowky and adjoining areas till Mandai because of which the stretch between Gagdil statue and Gotiram Bhaiya chowk on the Shivaji road will be closed for traffic. Citizens have been appealed to use alternate routes to avoid vehicular congestion.
As Ganesh idols are sold on the road between Savarkar statue to Samadhan Bhel on Sinhagad Road and at Kumbharwada in Keshavnagar, Mundhwa vehicles would be diverted on alternate routes from these areas, for preventing crowding. As per officials, vehicle parking arrangements have also been made in the river bed from Tilak bridge to Bhide bridge for people coming to mid-city areas for buying Ganesh Idols.
