The National Green Tribunal (NGT) on Wednesaday directed the district collectorate to submit the status of new landfill sites for disposal of garbage by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).

Hearing the plea on disposing waste at Uruli Devachi and Phursungi village, the bench questioned why the garbage was not being treated.
Representing the petitioners, Asim Sarode said the the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) has submitted its report after inspecting the landfill site as per directions of the NGT to point out the issues of non-treatment of garbage. “The bench had asked about the new sites identified for landfilling and even as there were three places cleared from the government for which PMC had deposited for land acquisition,” he said adding the NGT wants to know the status of the process for acquiring new landfill sites to be made available to PMC by the district collector. The tribunal had emphasised on adherence to conditions laid down by the authorization and compliance of the municipal solid waste rules of 2000 that call for scientific processing and management of garbage at landfill sites.
