To avoid road accidents caused by skidding of vehicles due to water either spilled over or leakage of water tankers, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has directed all civic-owned and private water tankers to undertake the necessary repairs by January 15.
In-charge of civic water supply department Nandkishore Jagtap said there are reports of road accidents due to spill or leakage of water from tankers.
The PMC provides water to the tankers from its stand posts at various locations in the city to meet the water needs of localities facing shortages. It has been noticed that water spills over from the tankers opening on top as well as leaks from its taps on city roads while water is carried to its destination from refilling point. Vehicles slip due to wet roads and accidents take place.
Thus, it is necessary for every water tanker to have a lid on the opening and if it is not there, they should not be allowed to refill water, said Jagtap. The PMC will also not supply water to tankers that has leaks and there is spilling of water, he added.
The water tanker service is an emergency service so they are been given deadline till January 15 to carry out the repairs, after which the tankers without repair will not be allowed to refill water. “If there are accidents due to leakage or spillage of water, then the tanker owner will be responsible,” said Jagtap.
In the case if citizens fall fall ill after drinking water supplied by tankers, the PMC has appealed to citizens to keep a check on the water tankers supplying water to them and reach out to the civic administration if they doubt the quality of water supplied by tankers as well as test the water in the laboratory.
There are few tankers which are allowed to refill the tank from treated water of sewage treatment plants but the water is not potable and should be used for construction, washing centres, farming or gardening activities.
“Tankers with green paint which have messages that read water not for drinking purpose should be supplied treated water from sewage treatment plants and citizens should not use this water for drinking purpose,” he said.
