After helping many women with successful pregnancies in Chennai using human egg freezing or oocyte cryopreservation, scientists from GENESIS,a Pune-based firm run by Patankar Fertility Solutions, recently used the method for a unique case in Pune.
In cryopreservation,a cryoprotectant is added to the eggs which are then stored at -196 0C in liquid nitrogen cylinders.
The Pune case required freezing both oocyte and embryo (fertilized oocyte) and hence was much more difficult, said Patankar Fertility Solutions director Dr Amit Patankar. After the retrieval of the eggs from the ovaries of the patient, the eggs should be fertilized within 6-8 hours with sperms. Unfortunately in this case, the patients husband was unable to produce the semen sample. A decision of freezing oocyte was taken after consulting the couple. Next day after procuring sperms from the husband, the oocyte were thawed and fertilized with the sperms. Two good quality embryos were transferred in the uterus and the remaining were frozen again. Unfortunately the patient could not conceive after which the doctors gave one more try in the next cycle which turned out be succsessful.
