A 21-year-old student of Army Institute of Technology (AIT) in Dighi drowned in the backwaters of Dhom dam in Wai taluka of Satara district on Sunday afternoon. Shriram Jugalkishor Gyan had gone there for a picnic with five friends, police said.
Gyan — who was from Bhangiwad town of Rajasthan — was pursuing mechanical engineering at AIT. The incident took place at 3.20 pm and the body was taken out around 8 pm, police said.
Inspector R G Galande of Wai police station said, “Gyan and his five friends had gone to Dhom dam on Krishna river for a picnic. Some of them entered the water while others stayed out. In this patch of the reservoir, the water is very deep. The friends said Gyan started drowning and one of them tried to rescue him but did not succeed. Another friend called the PCR.”
“Our teams started a search and also called some trekkers and divers, who are familiar with the area. Gyan’s body was fished out around 8 pm. His family members have been informed and the body will be handed over to them after the post-mortem.”
