Congress MLA and Mumbai Congress president Varsha Gaikwad on Saturday wrote to the state’s chief electoral officer (CEO) , demanding action against BJP leader and MLA Aashish Shelar for allegedly using a term ‘love jihad’.

“Maharashtra’s CEO had said he shall be taking action against the use of words like ‘vote jihad’ as the model code of conduct is now in force. Mumbai BJP chief Aashish Shelar while speaking about Dharavi redevelopment today, used the term vote jihad. I urge the EC to take appropriate action in the matter,” Gaikwad said.

On Wednesday, CEO S. Chockalingam had said that giving communal overtones to voting patterns by using terms like ‘vote jihad’ will be dealt with within the legal framework. “The model code of conduct came into force yesterday. If leaders use such terms, we will not spare them. If we receive any complaint, we will check it within the legal framework and submit our report,” he said.

The BJP has been attributing the BJP’s poor show in the state to ‘vote jihad’ during Lok Sabha polls. In a letter to the CEO, dated October 19, Gaikwad said BJP is trying to create a divide in the society by using such terms.
