The state government has decided to acquire a plot of land to construct a grand memorial of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj at Agra in Uttar Pradesh where the Maratha warrior king was kept under house arrest.
“The government will build a grand memorial of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in Agra where he was under house arrest…In order to achieve the right impact of the glorious history of Maharaj in this bravery memorial, the necessary activities (museum, audio-visual programs, documentaries, etc.) will be implemented through the (tourism) department,” stated the government resolution (GR) released on Friday.
According to the government resolution, the tourism department will act as the nodal department for land acquisition and other key aspects of the project. The Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation will function as the “implementing mechanism”. The tourism department will also provide the necessary funds for the project.
The GR further stated that a separate committee of historians and experts will be formed under the chairmanship of the Maharashtra minister of tourism for the construction of a grand memorial of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in Agra and for other matters.
On the occasion of the 395th birth anniversary of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had said at an event in Agra that the site where the Maratha warrior king was kept under house arrest would be acquired by the state government and a grand memorial would be built there.
“The significance of the decision is the preservation and promotion of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s historic valour, conservation of Maharashtra’s heritage and development of tourism, and establishing Maharashtra’s historical imprint at an important site in Agra,” said a statement issued by the CM office.
