THE MUMBAI police on Saturday arrested three persons after they allegedly entered a restricted zone of the Mumbai Port Trust (MbPT) leading to a search for the vehicle in which the trio breached the security area.

The police also recovered 20 cartridges belonging to a CISF officer, which fell inside the vehicle when he tried intercepting the vehicle on Saturday before it fled.

The police tracked down and arrested the Mahim residents and students all of whom are in their twenties. An officer said the trio had gone to south Mumbai in their car for dinner late on Friday night, after which they allegedly entered the restricted zone of the MbPT.

The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel tried to intercept the vehicle, but it sped away. However, a CISF official managed to stop the car when the accused were taking a reverse, said an officer from the Yellow Gate police station in Mumbai.

The CISF officer pointed a gun at the driver, but the car sped away and the magazine of his gun accidentally fell inside the vehicle. Following this, the CISF officials lodged a complaint at Yellow Gate police station.

The police collected the CCTV footage of the car and zeroed in on it with the help of the state transport department. After the police arrested the trio and seized the car, they found 20 cartridges belonging to the CISF officer in it. An officer said that prima facie it does not appear that the accused had any wrong intention and may have taken a wrong route, but they did not stop the vehicle even after the CISF intercepted them and fled with the cartridges.

The accused have been arrested under sections 447 (criminal trespass), 403 (dishonest misappropriation of property) and other relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code, the official said.
