The Central Railway Mumbai division has proposed to establish sleeping pods at Matheran railway station, a popular tourist destination. It has issued a tender looking for private agencies willing to develop and operate the sleeping pod facility. This operation will be based on a revenue-sharing model.

The process for awarding the construction and operational rights for the sleeping pods will be conducted through an e-auction on September 25. Bidders will need to quote a price higher than the reserve price set by the Central Railway, and the highest bidder will be awarded the rights.

The proposed sleeping pods, referred to as a ‘Pod Hotel,’ are expected to offer all necessary and modern amenities to ensure a comfortable stay for visitors. The facility will be constructed on a total area of 758.77 square metres designated for this purpose.

The selected licensee, who will operate the sleeping pods, may also provide in-house pantry services exclusively for the occupants or users of the sleeping pods. This suggests that guests will have convenient access to food and beverages. Furthermore, with necessary permissions from competent authorities, the licensee may have the option to develop other types of accommodations such as Swiss cottage tents or any other type of tent rooms/houses or cottages. Additionally, they can arrange guide facilities and trekking activities for the occupants, said a CR official.
