Shiv Sena parliamentary party leader and Lok Sabha MP Shrikant Shinde has been named one of the polling agents for the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate in the upcoming Vice-Presidential election.
The election is scheduled to be held in Parliament on Tuesday, September 9. The NDA has fielded Maharashtra Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan for the post, and with its numerical strength in both Houses, the ruling alliance is confident of securing a comfortable win.
Shinde chaired a meeting of Shiv Sena MPs in New Delhi on Monday, where Union minister Arjun Ram Meghwal briefed members about the voting process and guidelines. Alongside Shinde, Union ministers Kiren Rijiju and Ram Mohan Naidu will also serve as polling agents for the NDA candidate.
The party, led by Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, has already declared support for Radhakrishnan’s candidature.
“Shrikant Shinde, three-time MP from Kalyan, has been increasingly visible in parliamentary and diplomatic roles. In 2023, he led an all-party delegation to several countries under ‘Operation Sindoor’ to highlight India’s concerns on cross-border terrorism, a mission for which he was praised by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Now with this the party’s standing is visible in the NDA,” a Sena functionary said.
While the NDA expects a decisive victory, the opposition is yet to make significant headway in rallying numbers.
