On the same day as the two Shiv Senas set to battle it out in their respective public rallies, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar on Tuesday will take part in the Yuva Sangharsh Yatra, led by his grandnephew and party MLA Rohit Pawar from Pune.

Pawar will be walking from Pune for next 45 days to Nagpur covering over 800 kilometres — 830 villages in 28 tehsils from 10 districts — in a bid to grab government’s attention towards the problems faced by the youth.

“This is not a political yatra. This is being organised to bring the problems of the youth on the forefront. All those who are concerned can join the yatra,” Rohit said.

While emphasising that this will not be a ‘Rath Yatra,’ Rohit said he will be interacting with people on the road. “At a time when agriculture is failing, unemployment is rising and people are facing hardships, it is important that we listen to them,” he said.

Rohit said that all the problems will be noted down and “will be placed in front of the government in the winter session of the state legislature that will begin in December”.

On Tuesday, marking Dussehra, Rohit Pawar will be offering tributes to Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar statue. The yatra will travel within Pune to offer floral tributes to Mahatma Phule, Lahuji Salve, Rajmata Jijau and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

Five male and five female young students preparing for competitive examinations will green flag the yatra from Pune’s Lal Mahal and NCP chief Sharad Pawar will address the public rally at Tilak Smarak. The yatra will continue on Wednesday from Tulapur.

The Yuva Sangharsh Yatra is reminiscent of his grand uncle Sharad Pawar’s 1980 farmers’ yatra from Jalgaon to Nagpur, in which he had highlighted the issues faced by farmers.

Last year, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also embarked on the Bharat Jodo Yatra from Kanyakumari to Srinagar.

Rohit’s yatra comes at a time when Ajit Pawar, who had split from the party, had also staked a claim over the party’s name and election symbol, which is presently being heard by the Election Commission of India (ECI).
