Taking yet another stinging swipe at Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Shiv Sena mouthpiece Saamana has said the chief minister is busy clinching business deals even as farmers are committing suicide in Vidarbha, forcing the CM to say curtly that he does not react to editorials.
“The new CM being from Vidarbha ignited hopes that farmers in that region will get a new lease of life. But the opposite is happening. While the chief minister was busy laying out a red carpet for investors in Davos, farmers here were committing suicide as they had no money to pay the lenders. Such incidents are heart-wrenching,” an editorial in Saamana published on Friday said.
The Sena and BJP, despite joining hands to run the state government, share an uneasy relationship. Sena misses no opportunity to attack the BJP, the senior partner in the government.
The editorial also said the BJP-led state government had failed to meet the expectations of the people.
“During election season, farmers were showered with promises of a change. What happened to those promises? Who is responsible for fulfilling these promises now?” the edit said.
It further stated that the chief minister was from Vidarbha and it was imperative that the government worked towards turning Vidarbha into a suicide-free region. “The chief minister is from Vidarbha region. Then why are farmers dying? They do not even have enough money to buy poison to kill themselves. Is this a sign of a good government? A minister declared Vidarbha a liquor-free region. The government needs to ensure the region becomes suicide-free as well,” the edit said.
Asked to react, Fadnavis, meanwhile, said, “I do not react to editorials.”
Saamana is presently helmed by Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut.
Meanwhile, state BJP president Raosaheb Danve announced that the two allies would now set up a coordination committee to look into contentious issues between them and ensure smooth functioning of the government.
Despite running a government together, there has been increasing acrimony between the two parties, with Sena leaders often taking potshots at the BJP.
Last week, Environment Minister Ramdas Kadam of the Shiv Sena had made a statement asking the chief minister “not to make money”, which had angered the BJP. Kadam had later clarified he was not targeting the CM.
