As part of measures being taken by the state government to ensure safety of girls in schools, a new committee was constituted on Friday for collaborative efforts by two departments — School Education and Women and Child Development (WCD).

The committee under WCD Commissioner Prashant Narnavare will consult with experts and NGOs working in the field of education and girl students, among others, and suggest effective measures that can be taken to ensure safety of children in schools.

Apart from improving interactions with school-children the committee will also mull over the idea of creating animated content for young girls to easily understand concepts such as good touch and bad touch and including it in school curriculum.

Following the Badlapur incident, Maharashtra’s School Education Minister Deepak Kesarkar and WCD minister Aditi Tatkare held a meeting on Friday which was attended by several officials from the two departments with an aim to take more collaborative efforts toward ensuring safety of children.

Kesarkar said, “All schools should be connected with the Commissionerate through interactive TVs and multiple sessions should be taken on topics such as good touch, bad touch; for children. Various mothers’ groups created at school levels should be roped in for effective implementation of such workshops. The recently started initiative of celebrating Happy Saturday in schools can also have activities on related topics.”

Acknowledging the need for educating young girls regarding safety, Tatkare said, “Workshops conducted for girls in higher classes might be difficult for younger girls to understand. Thus, animated content can be used for their better understanding.”
