With no roof over their head, 60 survivors of the Irshalwadi landslide tragedy found shelter at an unlikely place on Thursday night: Nanivali’s Raigad Zilla Parishad school.
Deepak Thakur (44), a teacher who has been working at Nanivali’s ZP school since the 1990s, told The Indian Express, “When we heard of the incident, we opened the school doors for the victims. The district administration also instructed us to be prepared and assisted us to set up a relief camp. Besides providing a home to the villagers, they are also being provided medical care by doctors.”
Even as the government authorities arranged relief for the victims, Nanivali locals took charge and helped provide food to the Irshalwadi residents. Thakur said, “The locals have been helping throughout. Khichadi, varan bhaat, vada pav, puri, biscuits are some of the items which the survivors have been provided,” he said.
Pointing towards a box of medicines, Thakur added, “While the doctors treated the injured soon after they were rescued, they have been administering the victims with injections and medicines.”
Since Raigad district had been on red alert owing to incessant downpour, the school had remained shut since the past two days, ensuring that no classes were disrupted after the camp was set up.
After spending a night at the school, on Friday afternoon, the 60 survivors were transported to the Nadhal’s J M Mhatre Charitable Sanstha in NMMT buses. The survivors are slated to spend their night in the Sanstha’s hall.
Meanwhile, the Raigad district administration brought in shipping containers seeking to make temporary arrangements for the victims on Friday evening. According to the district administration, 37 families can be accommodated in the containers and facilities like water, gas connection, and electricity will be provided to the families.
On Friday, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde tweeted, “Containers with necessary facilities and other basic facilities have been made available for the temporary rehabilitation of the rescued citizens. The necessary materials for search and rescue operations have been immediately made available at the base camp. Coordinating officers have been appointed for this. 60 containers have been ordered for temporary accommodation of the accident victims. These citizens will be permanently rehabilitated through CIDCO.”
